How to Spot Fake Me-O and Whiskas in Pakistan
Me-O and Whiskas are the most trusted cat food brands in Pakistan, which also makes them the most counterfeited. Fake and repacked cat food is not just a waste of money; it can carry unknown ingredients and no nutritional guarantees, which is a genuine health risk for your cat. This guide teaches you to verify every bag and pouch before you buy, using the same checks legitimate importers apply.
Why Fakes Exist
The economics are simple: genuine imported cat food carries duty, freight and quality control costs, while a repacked fake costs almost nothing to produce. Unscrupulous sellers buy bulk or expired product, repackage it in copied bags, and sell at near genuine prices. Online marketplaces and roadside pet shops with no verifiable supply chain are the most common outlets. The defence is knowledge: fakes consistently fail at least one of the six checks below, and checking takes two minutes.
Check 1: Origin Printing
Genuine Me-O bags carry clear Made in Thailand printing, usually on the back panel near the nutritional information. Run your finger over it: genuine print is sharp, evenly inked and aligned with the surrounding text. Blurry, crooked or oddly spaced origin text is the single most common fake tell, because copiers struggle to reproduce fine print accurately. For Whiskas, check that the manufacturing origin stated matches the brand's real production sources and that the text is crisp. If the origin line looks like an afterthought, treat the bag as suspect.
Check 2: Batch Code and Expiry Date
Real factories print batch codes with industrial inkjet or laser printers, producing sharp, consistent characters, usually near the seal or beside the expiry date. Smudged codes, hand stamped codes, scratched off areas and missing codes are major red flags. The expiry date must be printed directly on the packaging, never on a sticker pasted over the original print, and it should give you several months of shelf life. A bag expiring next month is either old stock being dumped or a relabelled fake; either way, do not buy it. On our site, every Me-O and Whiskas product page tells you exactly where to find these markings.
Check 3: Seals and Bag Construction
Factory sealing is precise. Dry food bags are sealed with even, straight heat seals; pouches are flat sealed on all edges. Re glued seams, uneven crimps, and seals that peel open too easily suggest the bag was opened and resealed. For pouches, reject any that are puffed up or leaking, because a compromised seal means compromised food regardless of authenticity. Genuine packaging also feels right: the material has a consistent thickness and the colours are rich, while copies often feel thinner with slightly washed out printing.
Check 4: The Importer Label
Legally imported pet food in Pakistan should carry an importer label identifying the importing company. Its absence does not automatically prove a fake, since some grey imports skip it, but its presence from a verifiable importer is a strong positive signal. More important is consistency: the label should match the product inside, with no spelling errors, mismatched logos or wrong product names. Sloppy labels mean a sloppy supply chain, and pet food is the wrong place for that.
Check 5: Kibble and Content Inspection
If you have bought the genuine product before, compare. Genuine Me-O and Whiskas kibble has a consistent size, shape and colour within the bag, with a characteristic meaty aroma. Fakes often show uneven kibble sizes, off colours, excessive dust at the bag bottom, or a strange chemical smell. Weigh the bag on a kitchen scale if you are suspicious; counterfeits are frequently underfilled. Your senses are verification tools, and familiarity with the genuine product is the best fake detector there is.
Check 6: Price Sanity and Seller Vetting
Import duty and freight set a floor under genuine prices. A 1.1kg Me-O bag cannot honestly sell for PKR 800 when the landed cost is far higher; extreme discounts signal fakes, expired stock or bait pricing. Compare across two or three reputable sellers: genuine prices cluster in a narrow range. Vet the seller too: real websites, a working WhatsApp number, cash on delivery, and willingness to share batch and expiry details before you order. Sellers who dodge verification questions are telling you everything you need to know.
What to Do If You Suspect a Fake
Do not feed it to your cat. Photograph the bag, focusing on the origin print, batch code, seals and any labelling oddities, and report the seller to the platform. If you bought from us and anything looks off, message us on WhatsApp and we will verify the batch against our import records; in the rare event of a genuine problem, our 48 hour photo proof policy covers replacement or refund.
